They may have made it up the career ladder to the big offices, but senior-level executives need to work on their leadership abilities, strategic thinking and other key skills. That's the finding of a new survey by Boston-based outplacement and executive coaching firm ClearRock.
The survey of 100 organizations throughout the U.S. found that two-thirds of companies said executives need help with their leadership skills and more than half want them to improve their strategic thinking and communication abilities. Nearly half also said they need to work on team-building, vision and providing motivation.
Employers said they're willing to help execs get where they need to go. Three-quarters said they hire outside coaches to help senior leaders, and 40 percent provide coaching from within the company.
Companies appeared less worried about some other skills the survey inquired about. Just 24 percent said senior executives need help with creativity, and only 18 percent cited "managing their own expectations" as an area for improvement.
