Gov. Maura Healey turned to Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian to fill a vacant seat on the MBTA's governing body designated for a public safety expert.

Healey on Tuesday named Koutoujian to the T Board, which has been operating down one member since former Chair Tom Glynn resigned effective Nov. 1. The governor previously elevated Tom McGee, another former lawmaker and the board's vice chair, to the chair position.

Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll praised Koutoujian as a "highly respected and trusted leader."

"As a legislator and a Sheriff, he has always prioritized the health and safety of the people of Massachusetts, which is an important perspective to have on the Board," said Healey.

Koutoujian spent 14 years as a state representative, and in 2013, he finished second -- above current Senate President Pro Tempore Will Brownsberger and Senate President Karen Spilka -- in a seven-way Democratic primary election for the U.S. House. Congresswoman Katherine Clark won that election.

He was first elected sheriff in 2016 and cruised to reelection without an opponent in 2022.
