Middlesex County had the highest total compensation of any county in New England in 2010, according to new figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.
Total compensation in Middlesex County in 2010 was $69.4 billion, up 4.9 percent from 2009.
Suffolk County had the second-highest compensation in the region, at $55.2 billion.
Total compensation increased in 53 of New England's 67 counties, with Grand Isle, Vermont, experiencing the largest increase in compensation at 11.5 percent.
Fairfield County, Connecticut, had the highest average compensation at $94,680.
Nationwide, the BEA said "compensation increased in 2,480 counties and declined in 633 in the
U.S. in 2010, as the average annual compensation per job increased 2.7 percent to $58,451."
