Michael D. Badger

Age: 39
Title: Owner
Company: Badger Legal Group
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Westborough

Career highlights:
I am an employment law attorney providing counseling and litigation defense to employers in discrimination and other employment cases. Having worked in Boston and Washington, D.C., I found a wonderful legal environment here in Worcester. Worcester has a very professional but collegial legal bar with topnotch practitioners and accessible courts and judges. At the same time, employers in the area are genuinely interested in doing the right thing for their employees. On the personal side, this community offers so many real treasures for families in the area.

Community involvement:
I have been very active in the Worcester County Bar Association as well as with the Legal Assistance Corp. of Central Massachusetts (which provides topnotch legal representation to low income and elderly Worcester County residents). Both groups have kept me in touch with some of the best lawyers in Worcester County and around the state. I have also been more active as a political supporter in different state and local campaigns. Volunteering provides me with a constant reminder that important work gets done by people who are willing to show up and lend a hand.

Biggest success:
I have learned what every business owner has told me for more than 20 years: There is nothing like owning your business. Opening my own law firm after 12 years of firm and public interest practice has been an amazing, frightening and wonderful experience. Becoming “master of my own fate” has helped me remember how much I really love helping my clients and being there when they need me.

Dream job:
Besides running a much bigger law firm? I would love to be at NASA managing a manned space flight.

Businessperson he most admires and why:
I was very impressed by a local CEO at this year’s Business Leadership Awards. This gentleman not only spoke about the importance of making (and being responsible for) his company’s business decisions but also about creating an atmosphere of “good follower-ship” where employees are free to express opinions and disagreement but are motivated to work to implement the company’s decisions once they have been made.
