Michael Conrad recently made a leap from treasurer and tax collector for the City of Worcester to his new post at FCHP. WBJ asked him some questions about the transition from city government to nonprofit HMO.
Vital Stats:
Q. How are you settling in at your new office?
A. Everyone here at Fallon Community Health Plan is very welcoming and pleasant. I am enjoying the work environment, co-workers, and my new responsibilities.
Q. What's the biggest surprise you've had in starting the job?
A. The biggest surprise is the teamwork approach displayed throughout the company. The staff including the administration is very professional, experienced, and motivated. Every employee believes in what they do and the success that comes along with it.
Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. Understanding internal systems, SAP (Statutory Accounting Principles) method of accounting, and health care acronyms.
Q. How different is this job from your previous position?
A. My responsibilities are similar, but the industry is quite different and complex. There is certainly less interaction with the public while there is more responsibility of reporting and evaluating the company's financial position on a regular basis.
Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. Very similar. I pictured myself as an accountant or finance leader working for a successful company.
Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. Chestnut's Café right here at Chestnut Place.
Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
A. Continue to be a successful professional.
