Though chair of the largest law firm in Central Massachusetts, Mike Angelini is the ultimate behind-the-scenes guy.
As chairman of the board at The Hanover Insurance Group, he was instrumental in guiding the Worcester company a decade ago, when the fate of the struggling Allmerica Financial Corp. hung in the balance. The choice of Fred Eppinger as the company’s new president and CEO could not have been more brilliant. Since then, the publicly traded Hanover has taken significant strides toward becoming a world-class insurance company.
Yet another key sign of Angelini’s considerable power and influence is his two years on Massport’s board of directors. Angelini and Massport, which owns and operates Worcester Regional Airport, persuaded JetBlue chief Dave Barger to land his airline at Worcester for flights to Florida. “(Give) credit to Massport for helping to nudge us, over the years,” Barger remarked during an October visit to the city.
Angelini also sparked public debate in 2011 by calling for a merger of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, Worcester Business Development Corp., Worcester Redevelopment Authority, Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives and the Central Mass. Convention & Visitors Bureau. While most of those organizations remain mainly independent, of communication and coordination among them has ramped up considerably.
