Mezcal moves to downtown Worcester

One of Worcester’s most popular Mexican restaurants is moving to a new site downtown, giving it four times the space of its long-time Shrewsbury Street location.

Mezcal Tequila Cantina will officially open at 30 Major Taylor Blvd. beneath the parking garage on Monday at 4 p.m. For those eager to get a taste of the new Mezcal, the restaurant’s bar will open at 6 p.m. tonight and again Saturday. The Shrewsbury Street location will continue to operate through the weekend.

According to a statement from the restaurant, the move was driven by the Shrewsbury Street Mezcal having too little space to accommodate everyone who wants to eat there, and its president, Michael Covino, hopes guests won’t have to wait to be seated at the new site. In fact, he said, anyone whose wait is more than 15 minutes will receive a free order of guacamole.

According to the statement, the new location will offer a large outdoor patio, a separate function room with a private bar, an extended menu, more parking and free valet, and longer hours. When there’s an event at the nearby DCU Center, discounted parking will be available to those who dine at Mezcal, the company said.

Mezcal also has a location on Central Street in Leominster.

According to the statement, the Shrewsbury Street site will re-open as a burger bar in the spring. It will have “hand-crafted artisan burgers and an extensive sprit and cocktail program, including tap root beer and spiked milkshakes. The burger bar is expected to be open by the spring, the statement said.

Mezcal is part of Niche Hospitality Group, which owns and operates several restaurants in Central Massachusetts with a variety of concepts, including Bocado, Rye & Thyme and The Citizen Wine Bar.
