Mevion Medical Systems of Littleton has appointed its first chief operating officer, Curt Kienast.
Kienast is responsible for leading Mevion's end-to-end processes and scaling development, the proton therapy firm said Monday. His promotion to COO is effective immediately.
Kienast was previously vice president of global service. He has held many cross-functional roles during his tenure, including leadership roles in quality assurance, engineering and service, Mevion said. Kienast’s innovative approaches to customer service and lean manufacturing have been instrumental in the company’s continued growth and success, according to the company's announcement.
Creating the COO position became important with 22% growth last year, the company said.
Mevion has developed a proton therapy, a type of radiation therapy for cancer patients that the firm says is more precise to tumors and less damaging to nearby organs. The firm has partnered with clinical centers in the United States, Europe and China.
