Littleton-based Mevion Medical Systems on Tuesday said it has set a new record for treating patients with proton therapy, a targeted treatment that reduces exposure to radiation.
Mevion said in a press release it has treated 526 patients in 24 months, the highest volume of patients treated in a single room over two years. The treatments were performed using the Mevion S250 Proton Therapy System at Ackerman Cancer Center (ACC) in Jacksonville, Fla., the company’s first treatment location, which opened in April 2015.
According to the company, this exceeds two-year patient volume of many larger systems using more rooms. The company cited data provided by competitors at industry events to corroborate the milestone.
“Five-hundred-twenty-six patients in two years of clinical operation would be a huge achievement for a multi-room center, and ACC has now achieved that goal with a single room,” said Joseph Jachinowski, president and CEO of Mevion.
The system is used to treat a variety of cancers, including breast, head and neck, lung and prostate cancers. Mevion provides proton therapy treatment at several U.S. cancer treatment centers, including those in Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, Ohio, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.
