Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan on Friday announced that the towns of Carlisle, Chelmsford and Medway will participate in the first round of the 2013 Solarize Mass program, its state-sponsored program designed to encourage the adoption of small-scale solar projects.
Solarize Mass is run by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER), which work to encourage residents of participating towns to purchase solar electricity systems through marketing, education and discount group-buying programs. The goal is to drive down the cost of solar electricity.
"This year's program will build on the success of the last two years, saving residents and businesses money while creating local jobs," Sullivan said.
It is the third year that residents in Massachusetts towns will be offered the opportunity to purchase solar electricity systems for their homes from designated contractors at discounted rates.
The towns of Bourne, Brookline, Lee, Medford, Newton, Northampton and Williamstown will participate along with the three MetroWest towns.
According to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EOEEA), 749 residents and businesses signed contracts to install solar electricity systems last year, generating 4.8 megawatts of renewable energy. Two-hundred-twenty megawatts of solar energy have been installed in Massachusetts, which is approaching the goal of 250 megawatts by 2017, EOEEA said.
