MetroWest commuters and employers should mark March 12 on their calendars.
That's the day the Route 9 shuttle proposed by the MetroWest Regional Transit Authority will start running five shuttle buses to and from the MBTA Green Line at Woodland Station in Newton and points along Route 9.
"It's been a process for sure, but we're very excited about it," said Ed Carr, administrator of the MWRTA, which is based in Framingham.
The service will begin at 5:45 a.m. and buses will depart at 25-minute intervals for several hours in the morning and repeat the process for the evening commute.
Natick's MathWorks and Framingham's Staples Inc. have said their employees from Boston and inner suburbs who want to work in MetroWest would like to take public transportation, but many times there are not enough convenient times for them to do so. Newton-Wellesley Hospital told Carr that 70 employees who live in MetroWest are interested in using the service. The shuttle will go right by Newton-Wellesley Hospital on its way to Woodland Station.
The Route 9 shuttle provides another option for evening commutes through the Green Line, and then on by shuttle bus to Flutie Pass as well as the Framingham Technology Park at the nexus of Routes 9 and the Massachusetts Turnpike, where the express buses leave from in the morning.
The MWRTA is also moving farther down Waverly Street, Carr said. It will relocate to the former Meineke Car Care Center on the town line between Natick and Framingham. It is at the back of the West Natick train station, which will allow for connections between trains and the bus and shuttle routes. The MWRTA plans to lease the property with an option to buy it, Carr said.
