The state's regional Office of Business Development location in Westborough has closed and five other regional offices have taken responsibility for the 35 communities served by the MetroWest office, according to Darrell W. LeMar, deputy director of communications with the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development.
The office at 30 Lyman St. was closed in December. The cost savings of not replacing its one employee and no longer running the office is more than $100,000, he said.
"In these tough economic times, we are all being asked to do more with less," LeMar said. "We are working very hard to make sure all the businesses across the state are being served by the Massachusetts Office of Business Development. To that end, we have strategically reassigned different municipalities between five regional directors to assure that they're adequately covered."
When businesses have questions about expanding, or other questions about state resources, they often contact the closest business development office. Regional directors also often contact businesses in their area to make them aware of the resources available to them.
Redistribution
The Worcester office is now responsible for Bellingham, Franklin, Holliston, Hopkinton, Medway, Milford, Southborough and Westborough. The Devens office now covers Ashland, Framingham, Hudson, Marlborough, Millis, Natick, Sherborn and Sudbury.
Geography also played a part in the closure of the Westborough office, LeMar said. Other outposts, such as the one in the Berkshires, cover a wider geographic area and there would be no way to properly reassign coverage. By breaking it up among five other offices, no one regional director will be overwhelmed by the additional work, he said, and businesses will served by experienced directors.
