MetroWest hospitals have come out on top for safety in a semiannual ranking by The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital watchdog organization.
All local hospitals included in the fall 2015 report earned scores of “A,” the highest ranking issued by The Leapfrog Group for hospital safety. The scores are issued twice a year, in the spring and the fall.
MetroWest hospitals participating in the ranking are MetroWest Medical Center (both Framingham and Natick campuses received an “A”); Milford Regional Medical Center; Emerson Hospital in Concord; and Marlborough Hospital. Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer wasn’t included in the report, which partially depends on participation from the hospitals.
Hospital safety scores ranging from A through F are calculated based on 28 measures. A Leapfrog spokeswoman said the report includes acute-care hospitals that report at least 15 of the measures used to calculate the score; some small hospitals don’t report enough data to be included.
Among the measures used to calculate the scores are hand hygiene, medication reconciliation practices, rate of death among surgical inpatients, nurse workforce and incidence of falls and trauma.
Joan Davis, vice president of quality at Marlborough Hospital, said hospital officials are proud to have received a second consecutive “A” on hospital safety. Marlborough improved its score in the spring after receiving a “C” last year, Davis said. Administrators made a conscious effort to improve safety practices through new safety initiatives, such as daily huddles with management staff to discuss potential safety hazards, and hospital-wide alerts when safety violations occur.
“It’s very important to be transparent with the staff,” Davis said.
