Mercantile Center lands coffeehouse as retail anchor

One of the most high-profile retail spaces in downtown Worcester will be a coffee shop and roastery.
Coffee shop Fuel America, which also will serve beer and wine, will open next fall in one of the most high-profile retail spaces in downtown Worcester at Front and Mercantile streets.
The 5,264-square-foot space sits at a corner of Mercantile Center where the Galleria mall once stood. That two-story section of the sprawling office and retail complex includes offices for around 500 UMass Memorial Health Care information-technology workers, but the coffee shop will be its first announced retail tenant.
The shop, which has three locations in Boston, is slated to open in the fall after construction starts early next year, Mercantile Center announced Wednesday.
Fuel America is the latest restaurant announced for the area of downtown surrounding Worcester Common.
Just across Front Street, a 110 Grill is scheduled to open in March as part of a 170-room AC Hotel. A healthy-eating restaurant called Protein House will be one of several commercial tenants just down Front Street at the 145 Front at City Square development, which also has 365 apartment units.
On the other side of the Common, an indoor and outdoor bar called the Brew Garden will open as soon as next March in the Grid District development. Stix Noodle Bar is slated to open later next year adjacent to the Brew Garden.
Fuel America will include a roastery to be available for tours and coffee tastings. The cafe will roast specialty coffees daily and post a schedule to let customers know which beans while be brewed on set days.
The cafe will include fresh-pressed juices, healthy seltzer drinks, fresh baked goods and handmade breakfast & all-day sandwiches, salads and fruit smoothies, according to Mercantile Center.
Several other retail spaces totaling about 25,000 square feet are envisioned for Mercantile Center, including a two-story space near Foster Street.
