David Andelman, who bought the Mendon Twin Drive-In with his brothers Dan and Michael Andelman in 2014, will resign from the company, as well as CEO of Phantom Gourmet, Inc. in Boston, which he co-founded in 2013, according to a statement posted to the Phantom Gourmet page on Facebook on Tuesday.

The resignation comes after Andelman faced sharp backlash for widely circulated now-private Facebook posts reportedly taunting Black Lives Matter protests. Andelman appears to have since made his page private.

In the posts, Andelman taunted people who took a knee in protest over police brutality, made light of the looting following some protests, and said society should "defund potatoes, not police." He has since apologized.

Andelman will relinquish ownership of the Phantom Gourmet company, according to the statement. His brother Dan will take over as CEO, per the announcement.

Just two weeks ago, the Andelman brothers announced they planned to expand their drive-in business to Marshfield. But following the controversy around Andelman’s Facebook posts, the Marshfield Fair announced on Monday it was breaking off its business relationship with both Andelman and Phantom Gourmet, writing that it will have no affiliation with either.

The Mendon Twin Drive-In, located on Route 16 in Mendon, opened in 1954. It has since expanded to include two movie screens and a beer garden, the latter of which was added in 2014.

Though I have no idea what Mr. Andelman said, I am sad to see ... if we do not all agree with the current situations we face, we are shunned and punished for our viewpoint.
