The Mendon Twin Drive-In, located on Route 16 in Mendon, will expand to Marshfield, the outdoor theater's owners announced in a Facebook post Friday morning.
The Andelman brothers -- Dan, Dave and Michael -- who bought the theater in 2014, according to their website, said they were moving as quickly as they could to open the new location, but did not specify exactly when it would be open to the public. More details would be online next week, they said, after which they expect to begin selling tickets online.
The Mendon Twin Drive-In, a Central Mass. institution, opened in June of 1954, according to the company's website. A second movie screen was added to the property in 1998, and a beer garden after that, in 2014.
The announced expansion comes at a time when traditional indoor movie theaters remain closed due to restrictions meant to deter the spread of coronavirus, making drive-in theaters where social distancing is easier a popular option.
