The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation granted $800,000 for the College of the Holy Cross to conduct humanities-based research to enrich its understanding of Worcester and create partnerships between the community and the Jesuit liberal arts school.
College professors will pair up with community organizations to submit proposals to a committee in early 2018. Mini grants will then be awarded to fund up to 14 projects, with research beginning in the summer, the school announced Wednesday.
The program, dubbed Scholarship in Action, will allow the college to utilize its intellectual resources toward the needs of the city, the college said.
The college has already reached out to several local organizations and projects are in the planning stages, the school said.
“This initiative draws on our strengths – strong community partnerships, active engagement of students in Worcester, and our faculty’s commitment to engaging students in their research projects,” said Holy Cross Provost Margaret Freije.
