The Town of Medway has launched a new program aimed at cutting down on youth substance abuse, with a student survey showing substance use roughly constant for the past decade.
The new Substance Abuse Prevention Medway Coalition kicked off virtually in November after about a year of preparation and planning. Over the next year, the coalition plans to increase its membership and apply for a Drug-Free Communities grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which would bring in an expected $625,000 for prevention programs. More than 700 communities nationally received such funding in fiscal 2020, according to federal data.
The coalition will work to prevent the use of alcohol, drugs and tobacco among Medway students. Leaders are working on adding representation from the community in 12 different areas, including youth, parents, law enforcement, schools and healthcare professionals.
