Genzyme Corp. has expanded its partnership with The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and a Switzerland-based non-profit to research new treatments for Malaria.
The Cambridge-based company says the coalition will look to find new compounds that it says offer and entirely different way to treat the disease. Malaria kills an estimated 1 million people each year, and infects many times more, often leaving childhood survivors with brain damage or other ailments.
The economic effects are also devastating. Malaria costs Africa and estimated $12 billion in lost GDP every year, and consumers 40 percent of public health spending.
The coalition is looking to line up additional resources to scale up the program, which has four early-stage products in its portfolio. MMV, which has more than 20 total projects for malaria treatment and eradication, will retain royalty free rights to develop and distribute new products made under the partnership.
