MCPHS Dedicates Sonography Lab

Jacquelyn Gutc The expansion of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has helped grow the presence of college students in downtown Worcester.

MCPHS University will dedicate its new $5.3 million sonography lab in Worcester today, the school said.

The Boston-based school began its sonography program in Worcester in September with 12 students, said department chair Dr. Carmelo Fernandez. Construction on the new space lasted roughly a year, he said, and includes classrooms, offices and a sonography lab.

“Ultrasound is still very much a technology in evolution,” Fernandez said in a statement. “The need for highly-trained sonographers is increasing each year, and MCPHS stands ready to meet a growing need in health care delivery.”

Sonography uses the reflections of high-frequency sound waves to construct the image of a body organ. It’s commonly used during pregnancy to study fetal growth.

The university plans to grow its Worcester sonography program to 60 students over the next two years by launching new programs in vascular and musculoskeletal sonography, Fernandez said.

MCPHS is currently the only school in all of New England to grant bachelor’s degrees in sonography, according to the university.

MCPHS opened in downtown Worcester in 2000 and has more than 1,200 students. The school plans to double enrollment in Worcester over the next five years.
