MCPHS University has purchased a 43,000-square-foot Main Street building in Worcester for nearly $7 million.
The building, known locally as The Lofts, is a five-story mixed-use property at 379 Main St. formerly owned by property management firm SJ Realty. The building includes 55 single units mostly occupied by MCPHS students who previously rented from SJ Realty.
"The proximity of the Lofts to our campus and everything downtown Worcester has to offer have made it a huge hit with our students,” MCPHS University President Charles Monahan said in a statement. “There isn’t a week that goes by without someone telling me about seeing our students in white coats on Main Street and in restaurants and businesses downtown, and this purchase builds on our commitment to helping enliven downtown over the past 20 years.”
The building is sandwiched between the Wells Fargo Advisors Building and another multi-tenant property including Markos Jewelers on the ground level.
The building would join a cluster of other MCPHS facilities in the Main Street area, including residential and academic buildings on Foster Street and another facility on Norwich Street.
The university also controls several academic and residential facilities in Lincoln Square.
