U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Worcester, was expected to tour the Family Health Center at 26 Queen St. in Worcester this morning to review ongoing construction there funded by federal stimulus money.
Approximately 18,000 square feet of clinical space is being renovated to create a walk-in center for primary and urgent care, according to Noreen Johnson Smith, vice president for development and advancement at the health center. The total cost of the project is $515,800 and all of it is being covered by the America Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The existing Queen Street location, which is at the former home of Worcester City Hospital, totals about 56,000 square feet and offers primary care, dental, radiology and lab services. The Family Health Center also has a clinic in the city's Webster Square neighborhood, as well as six school-based health centers.
Kaplan Construction of Brookline is the construction company on the project, while Steffian Bradley of Boston served as the architecture firm. The renovations are slated for completion by Sept. 30.
McGovern's visit comes as he gears up for re-election. While there are no Democratic challengers for his seat representing the 3rd District, there are currently five Republican primary candidates: Robert J. Chipman of Plainville; Robert A. Delle of Westborough; Brian J. Herr of Hopkinton; Martin A. Lamb of Holliston; and Michael P. Stopa of Holliston.
The Massachusetts primary elections are Sept. 14. The full election is Nov. 2.
