The building housing longtime Worcester business McGovern's Greendale Liquor and Package Store is under new ownership, following a $1.03M sale.
The store, located at 440-444 West Boylston St., was sold in a deal finalized on Nov. 13, according to Worcester District Registry of Deeds records. It was sold to 444 West Boylston Street Trust, established by Ritaben Patel of Auburn and Amitkumar Patel of Middleton.
The property was sold by Mary Ann McGovern, wife of the store’s late founder, Walter McGovern, and mother of Congressman Jim McGovern (D-Worcester).
A Worcester native, Walter opened McGovern's Greendale Liquor and Package Store after a stint working at the David Clark Co., according to his obituary.
Ritaben Patel is now listed as the manager on the state’s Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission license database. Patel bought the business in a separate transaction from the property sale, according to Wendy Talcott, daughter of Walter.
Walter was the former president of the Worcester County Package Store Association, with his son using his gavel from his father’s stint leading the WCPSA when he was named chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Rules in 2019, according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
The 3,666-square-foot retail space at 440-444 West Boylston St. was built around 1930, according to City of Worcester property records. The property received a 2026 tax assessment value of $763,700.
CLARIFICATION: This article was updated to clarify the business and property were sold in separate transactions.
