Eileen McAnneny, a veteran of public policy battles on Beacon Hill and a longtime advocate for business interests, will succeed Michael Widmer as president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation.
The MTF Board on Tuesday unanimously agreed to name McAnneny to the post, an influential one on Beacon Hill where lawmakers have long turned to the foundation for economic data and policy recommendations.
Michael Widmer has held the top job at MTF since 1992. He succeeded Richard Manley, who also held the post for many years.
McAnneny is currently the president and chief executive officer of the 10,000-member Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants.
The former director of public policy for Fidelity Investments, McAnneny known to many on Beacon Hill in connection with her years of business advocacy while working for Associated Industries of Massachusetts, where she was deeply involved in health care and tax matters and was the trade group's senior vice president and associate general counsel.
Another Associated Industries of Massachusetts official is also poised to rise to an influential position in state government. Governor-elect Charlie Baker recently named AIM vice president of government affairs Kristen Lepore as his administration and finance secretary.
In a statement, MTF Board Chair Fay Donohue, CEO of Delta Dental, said, "Eileen is a highly credible individual among the business community and on Beacon Hill by virtue of her unique breadth of experience and knowledge of tax policy, the Massachusetts budget, finance and government. As importantly, she is a highly effective consensus builder and convener, with significant expertise communicating complex ideas to diverse constituencies. We are confident that she brings the strategic and thoughtful leadership needed to build on the tremendous efforts of Mike Widmer, who has led MTF wisely and well for more than two decades."
