The MBTA is ditching its "honor box" payment system at its parking lots, effective July 6.
MBTA riders who park their cars in the lots are often asked to jam dollar bills into slots to pay for their spot. The daily parking fee at many "honor box" lots ranges from $4 to $7.
The MBTA, which referred to its "honor box" system as "archaic," said Monday that the current alternative, "PayByPhone," is used by 75 percent of public transit riders who park in the "honor box" lots. Riders who do not sign up for "PayByPhone" will receive a monthly invoice based on the address listed on the registration of their vehicle.
The invoice system will cost riders 50 cents more than using the "PayByPhone" system, according to the MBTA.
Riders will have 30 days to make a payment, or face late fines and an eventual hold on the vehicle owner's driver's license or registration. A $20 per ticket fee from the Registry of Motor Vehicles could also be added at that point.
A monthly parking permit, costing between $70 to $90, is another alternative. The MBTA in August will allow a permit holder to park at any MBTA parking facility with the "same or lower daily parking fee," according to the agency.
