Last week Gov. Charlie Baker toured a nearly completed Springfield site that will become a $95 million, 204,000-square-foot plant for assembling subway cars. The plant owned by CRRC will turn out 152 new Orange Line cars and 252 Red Line cars, completely replacing those two fleets.
On Monday, the MBTA's Fiscal and Management Control Board approved a $21.3 million contract for test tracks and a vehicle shed to test those new Red Line cars. Construction will be undertaken by Barletta Heavy Division, the low bidder.
The work will replace existing freight rail called Seaport Track with transit rail, running the transit rail along the South Boston Haul Road and linking it to Cabot Yard, a Red Line repair facility.
The test track in Boston will allow the new Red Line cars to "undergo a battery of tests" to ensure their fitness, MBTA General Manager Luis Ramirez said.
