Maynard Firm Awarded Hydrogen Patent

Nanoptek Corp. of Maynard has been awarded a U.S. patent for technology that allows for the completely carbon-free production of hydrogen.

Officially, the innovation is known as "stress-induced bandgap-shifted semiconductor photoelectrolytic, photocatalytic, photovoltaic surface and method for making same." Practically, it's a more efficient way of making hydrogen from water and sunlight.

Nanoptek says that unlike the way most hydrogen is produced, its method is completely carbon-free and renewable.

The company said the process could promote the use of hydrogen for producing "green" electricity, powering fuel cell vehicles and providing hydrogen for use as an important chemical feedstock for manufacturing, especially in remote off-grid and off-pipeline regions of the world.
