J.M. Coull
, a Maynard-based construction company, is setting up an outpost in the Nutmeg State, marking a decade worth of work the firm has done in the Bay State's southern neighbor.

J.M. Coull is a 25-year-old company that does work for technology manufacturers, biopharmacuetical companies, colleges and retailers, according to Andrew Coull, the firm's president. Its new office in Connecticut will be located in Shelton, which is about 25 minutes outside of New Haven.

Shelton was a good choice for the company because it's deep into Connecticut, representing a commitment to doing business in the state.

"It will allow us to access most of the state readily from there, including New Haven and coastal areas, (as well as) Stamford and Danbury," Coull said.

If the company continues to expand in Connecticut, it could eventually lead to opening an office in the southeastern part of the United States, but the company is taking it one step at a time.

Extended Reach

J.M. Coull already does work throughout New England and eastern New York state, and hopes to expand its Connecticut work to include academic buildings, he said. Its previous collegiate experience includes projects for Boston University and Northeastern University, Coull said.

Building clean rooms for high tech companies, which keep the air inside clean from particles so delicate manufacturing and assembly can be done properly, brought the company to Connecticut. But it has also done work for F.W. Webb, the bathroom fixtures supplier, in New Haven, Hartford and Waterbury, among other companies.

Here in Massachusetts J.M. Coull has done work for Billerica-based Millipore Corp., a life sciences supplier, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Gloucester and Veryfine of Littleton, which is now owned by Sunny Delight Beverage Co. of Ohio.

While the overall construction industry is suffering because of the recession, Gergory Beeman, president of the Massachusetts chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors in Burlington, said it wasn't surprising that J.M. Coull would be looking south.

"In this marketplace, in general...one clear trend has been they are going where the work is," he said. "It's not uncommon to see companies based in Massachusetts seeking work in other states or vice versa."

Beeman said J.M. Coull also has many repeat customers, so it follows that the company would locate an office near clients that are putting up buildings. "J.M. Coull seeks out clients that want long-term relationships," Beeman said. That strategy has helped the company grow, he said.

J.M. Coull has 32 employees. It has chosen Thomas Zabel to run the Shelton office. He ran his own company previously and lives in Burlington, Conn.

"We thought it would it would be good to have somebody with business as well as construction experience. We also felt it should be someone who lived in the state and knew all the principal people," Coull said.
