Mayer Takes New England Media Reins

The New York Times Co. is promoting Christopher M. Mayer to head of the New England Media Group, which includes The Boston Globe and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

Mayer, who is currently senior vice president for circulation and operations at the Globe, will also be publisher of that paper. The appointment to the new position is effective Jan. 1, 2010.

Mayer succeeds P. Steven Ainsley, who became publisher in 2006 and will retire at the end of 2009.

Mayer joined the Globe in 1984 in the information services department. He has served as chief information officer, senior vice president of circulation and senior vice president of the Globe's former home delivery subsidiary, and became senior vice president of circulation and operations in 2008.

Mayer has a bachelor's in computer science from Yale University.
