In January, Brent Maugel will step down as president of Harvard’s Maugel DeStefano Architects, a firm he founded 30 years ago. Jonathan Cocker, Mike Kunz, and Mark Pelletier, principals and majority shareholders, will lead the firm as a team.
“Brent Maugel has been a noted design influencer for more than 40 years. It has been a privilege to work alongside one of the icons of the New England architectural community,” Pelletier said in a Tuesday press release.
The leadership transition plan began in 2018 when the trio, studio managers at the time, were promoted to principals.
Maugel will move to an advisory role serving as a design influencer on major projects.
“As designers, we have exceptional opportunities to follow our passions throughout our lifetime. My new role will allow me to pursue those interests at a more leisurely pace,” said Maugel in the press release, “I am honored to have worked alongside many great commercial real estate industry leaders and architects throughout my career. It has been a fantastic journey—one that I am truly humbled to have experienced.”
Maugel DeStefano Architects is the second-largest architectural firm in Central Massachusetts, with seven local architects and a staff of 33. Among the notable designs from Maugel’s time leading the firm were 60,000-square-foot Littleton headquarters for Workers Credit Union, the transformation of the former Allegro Microsystems building in Worcester into the 113,000-square-foot I-290 Connector life sciences building, Vecna Robotics’ 80,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Waltham, and Spring Bank Pharmaceuticals’ 30,000-square-foot research and development facility in Hopkinton.
