MathWorks signs wind farm deal to help it reach its carbon goals

Math computing software company MathWorks in Natick signed a 12-year purchase agreement with Enel North America for 50,000 megawatt hours of wind-generated electricity and the associated renewable energy certificates annually from the Oklahoma energy company’s wind farm.

Mathworks said the deal will help the company meet its carbon neutrality goals by 2023. The power it will receive, along with the credits, will give MathWorks enough power to operate its two main campuses in Natick and six field offices across the United States, according to its press release Thursday.

"Our mission has always included a focus on environmental sustainability, so we're proud to announce our partnership with Enel to address all of our Scope 2 emissions," Jack Little, co-founder and CEO of MathWorks, said in the press release. "As we accelerate the pace of engineering and science, we hope this power purchase agreement serves as a model for other companies looking for ways to make their operations more sustainable and affordable, while also increasing overall demand for renewable electricity.”

Enel’s 25 Mile Creek wind project is the company’s 12th wind farm in Oklahoma. It is a 250-megawatt wind project the company estimated will generate more than 1,100 gigawatt hours of wind energy per year. Enel North America is the North American  branch of Italian energy company Enel S.p.A.
