Nearly $16.4 million in MassWorks funding will be spread across nine Central Massachusetts towns and cities to help cover infrastructure projects during economic recovery, state officials announced on Thursday.
The funding is part of $68 million slated for distribution across 36 different projects related to housing, economic development and road safety projects in 35 cities and towns, according to a press release from Gov. Charlie Baker’s office.
Across the state, the funding round is projected to create more than 3,500 new housing units and support more than 7,000 construction jobs, as well as help establish more than 3,900 new jobs.
The City of Worcester, among the recipients, will receive $1.5 million to support construction of Green Island Boulevard, a new street in the city’s Canal District. The construction will include two travel lanes, a turning lane, bicycle accommodations, on-street parking, sidewalk sand streetscaping.
