To the Editor,
I was happy to read your recent editorial suggesting that the training option in Central Massachusetts need to be more easily available to our region's employers (âIt's All About The Execution,â WBJ Editorial, May 26, 2008). Your suggestion that the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership is a great resource is shared by the many organizations it has helped understand and apply lean manufacturing principles.
Over the past year, the Skyline Technical Fund, which supports the Worcester Regional Technical High School, has utilized MEP expertise and personnel to train nearly 400 people at Worcester Technical High School and at company sites.
The implication that Mass MEP has done a poor job of outreach, however, misses the mark. Mass MEP maintains strong alliance with the Associated Industries of Massachusetts (a trade organization representing the region's employers), the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency (a quasi-public state agency that provides industrial finance) and the Massachusetts Business Resource Team (a group of economic development professionals within the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development).
All of these organizations help employers find various resources, including training. In addition, a Google search of âlean manufacturing in Massachusettsâ yields instant access to Mass MEP web site. While there may be strategies to further highlight Mass MEP's work, they have certainly made themselves accessible to any manufacturing firm interested in training.
Edwin G. Coghlin Jr.
President of the Skyline Technical Fund
