MassMEP, WPI pledge $2.5M for voke/tech schools

John Killam, president and CEO of the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership.

The Worcester-based Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership and Worcester Polytechnic Institute will provide a $2.5-million in-kind grant of software and educational materials to dozens of vocational technical high schools across the commonwealth, MassMEP said Tuesday.

The goal of the grant is to train students on high-tech machinery, according to MassMEP. The software, which provides students with hands-on training through simulation programs, will be used to complement existing curriculum.

Vocational schools that partner with the Manufacturing Advancement Center Workforce Innovative Collaborative (MACWIC), a MassMEP workforce development program, will have unlimited access to its online learning tools, according to MassMEP. Twenty-two students will receive their MACWIC certification from MassMEP’s Accelerated CNC Skills Training program at WPI and UMass Lowell. A graduation ceremony will take place on Oct. 14 at the Eisengrein Community Center in Devens.
