MassDevelopment has awarded the Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) $400,000 toward outreach and training programs for defense manufacturers.
The grant is part of a $1,475,588 grant to MassDevelopment from the Department of Defense. The funding is designed to help create a proactive response to defense budget cuts and sequestration for an industry that has become increasingly dependent on defense contracts, according to MassMEP.
“The variety and unique range of technologies provided by enterprises within this network make it imperative that we help them to competitively position their firms for a future of diminishing defense funding,” Jack Healy, president of MassMEP, said in a statement.
MassMEP, based in Worcester, is a statewide resource for manufacturing companies in Massachusetts with the goal of helping them grow through workforce development and operational improvements. The defense and manufacturing sectors are intertwined, according to MassMEP. The MassDevelopment OEA grant and MassMEP’s existing resources will be used to assist manufacturing companies in identifying additional opportunities for growth and employee retention.
MassMEP will help companies identify other applications for defense-related products, expand their defense industry base, and help accelerate the commercialization of defense-related products.
