Four Central Massachusetts firms have been named winners of economic impact awards, given annually by MassEcon, a nonprofit that helps promote business growth in the commonwealth.
Unum Group and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Saint-Gobain’s new facility in Devens and Hamilton Storage Technologies in Franklin are among 14 companies being honored this year by MassEcon, the organization announced today.
Unum moved its Worcester office, with about 600 employees, to a new downtown location on Foster Street earlier this year as part of the CitySquare development, under a 17-year lease. Just around the corner, Saint Vincent is expected to open its new cancer and wellness center.
Saint-Gobain, long a fixture in Central Massachusetts, opened a new plant in Devens to manufacture a component of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and planned to add about 100 jobs.
Unum will receive MassEcon’s “gold” award for Central Massachusetts; Saint Vincent the silver and Saint-Gobain the bronze.
Meanwhile, Hamilton Storage, which recently moved its East Coast headquarters from Hopkinton to Franklin, has seen growing demand for its storage systems that serve the biotech industry. Earlier this year, the company said it plans to add jobs. Hamilton will receive the gold award for the Southeast region of the commonwealth.
"The key to our economic recovery is innovation, and these Team Massachusetts Impact Award winners exemplify that innovative spirit,” said Greg Bialecki, the secretary of housing and economic development. "Continuing to support and grow the innovation economy is one of the central goals of the (Patrick) administration's economic development plan, and we look forward to seeing these companies continue to grow in the future."
The winners from each region will be recognized at a Nov. 26 awards luncheon in Boston.
