About 60 different addresses in key commercial and industrial areas in Fitchburg wil have access to high-speed internet thanks to a $250,000 grant from MassDevelopment.
Businesses along Main Street and Airport Road have been seeking high-speed internet for about a decade, but due to current conditions in the area, they have been reliant upon dial-up, DSL or T1 lines, which can be expensive to maintain, the Fitchburg Mayor’s Office said.
This has caused job-creation, retention and safety issues as the airport serves as a staging area during times of emergency without access to high-speed internet.Â
Trenching work to bring fiber to these dark areas will be complete by the end of this year, the city said.
