A home heating oil spill has proved costly for Wells Fargo Bank.
The state Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) fined Wells Fargo $38,190 for alleged violations of waste site cleanup regulations at its property at 27-29 Henry St. in Fitchburg.
Officials found that the bank did not address the basement spill of heating oil at the residence quickly enough despite repeated contact attempts by Massachusetts officials, and did not submit necessary documents to the state.
MassDEP said in a statement Thursday that it was first notified of the spill in December of 2013 by the Fitchburg Board of Health. In the absence of a response from the bank, MassDEP initiated a state-funded cleanup of the oil spill and again wrote to Wells Fargo. According to the EPA, the bank failed respond as required and submit documents.
In a consent order with MassDEP, the statement said, San Francisco-based Wells Fargo has since agreed to perform all necessary cleanup actions at the site. It has also agreed to establish a point of contact for environmental matters within Massachusetts and to provide that contact information, with instructions in the event of a future release of oil or hazardous materials, to all of its real estate brokers for its properties within the state.
According to property records for the city of Fitchburg, 27-29 Henry St. is a two-family home valued at $156,100.
