MassBay Community College has added a new center at its Ashland campus this fall for workforce development in coordination with a state career center office.
The new space will hold training and workshops with MassHire Metro South/West, a state workforce training office with locations in Framingham and Norwood. The space has been created thanks to a $75,000 state grant the Wellesley college received in January.
MassBay's Workforce Development Center is meant to help provide enough jobs for area employers, particularly in technology and engineering. Training will also include noncredit computer courses, internships with area employers, career advisement, job-seeking assistance and other services. The center, a renovated space in the existing MassBay footprint at 250 Eliot St., includes 30 new laptops, and two interactive presentation screens.
The new center joins an automotive technology program at MassBay's Ashland campus.
State financing for the new center brings to more than $1.3 million the amount MassBay has received since 2017 in state workforce capital funding. Other grants include new biotechnology and cyber security program equipment, a health sciences simulation lab and equipment, and electrical engineering equipment for the school's STEM program.
MassBay also has two new transportation features this fall for its Framingham campus. A free pilot Uber program will give MassBay students living at Framingham State University residence halls to classes at MassBay's main Wellesley campus. MassBay has also added an overflow parking lot at Brookdale Cushing Park, an assisted living facility at 2 Dr. Harvey Cushing Way in Framingham, with a shuttle to run from there to and from the Flagg Drive campus.
