The Massachusetts minimum wage will increase from $12 to $12.75 per hour beginning on Wednesday.
In 2018, lawmakers set the minimum wage to increase annually until it reaches $15 per hour in 2023. The planned increase was part of the Grand Bargain legislation, which saw a number of worker protections put in place, including a paid family and medical leave program.
Tipped employees will also get a raise on Wednesday and must be paid a minimum of $4.95 per hour provided their tips bring them up to at least $12.75 per hour. If the total hourly rate for the employee including tips does not equal $12.75 at the end of the shift, the employer must pay the difference.
Attorney General Maura Healey’s office has made a wage-and-hour poster available to employers. Employers are required to display in English and any other language spoken by 5 percent or more of their workforce. The free poster is in seven languages and in formats employers, workers, members of the public, and organizations can easily access.
