Massachusetts medical marijuana fees to be eliminated

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission announced Tuesday medical marijuana patients will no longer be required to pay a $50 annual registration or renewal fee.

The change goes into effect beginning Nov. 1 and came as part of a vote on new medical use of marijuana regulations.

Central Massachusetts has 10 medical marijuana retailers. Three of them are located in Worcester: Good Chemistry, The Botanist and Mission Massachusetts.

“The commission heard from many patients who described the annual registration fee as a barrier to care, and we continue to take their concerns very seriously,” Commission Chairman Steven Hoffman said, in a press release.

Through Oct. 31, the $50 fee will continue to apply to patient registrations and renewals and no refunds will be issued. The commission’s $10 fee to replace a registration card will remain in place after Nov. 1.

To register for the Medical Use of Marijuana Program, individuals are certified by a qualified clinician and certification is provided after the patient is diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition. Clinicians are still allowed to charge patients a fee for annual certification visits.
