Massachusetts Has More Efficient Buildings Than Most

Only nine states have more square feet of energy efficient commercial buildings than Massachusetts, according to the U.S. Green Building Council.

Massachusetts had more than 13 million square feet of so-called “LEED-certified” space in commercial buildings in 2011. Texas tops the list with more than 50 million square feet.

LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the internationally recognized benchmark for green building and sustainable design, is certified by the USGBC.

But, the Bay State ranks seventh in the number of LEED-certified square feet per capita (two square feet per person).
