The state’s unemployment rate hit its highest level in nearly two years in July as the economy gained just 300 jobs, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said.
The unemployment rate ticked up 0.2 percentage points over June and reached 7.2 percent last month, up 0.4 of a percentage point over 2012. It last reached 7.2 percent in September 2011.
Adding to the bleak picture was what the BLS initially said was a gain of 2,800 jobs in June, but was revised downward to a loss of 2,100.
The largest employment gains in July came from industries leisure and hospitality (1,700); trade, transportation and utilities (1,500); and information services (800).
Gains were offset by job reductions in education and health services (1,100) and manufacturing (400). Manufacturing has lost 3,500 jobs, or 1.4 percent of its workforce, so far this year. Government jobs were down by 2,200 positions.
