For the second consecutive month, Massachusetts unemployment numbers saw a slight increase.
November’s total unemployment rate was 2.9%, up 0.1% from the revised October estimate of 2.8%, according to a press release issued by the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development on Friday. This rate is 0.8% lower than the national unemployment rate of 3.7%, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development’s estimates show a total labor force of 3,729,000 in the state, with 3,621,200 employed residents and 107,800 unemployed. The state added 7,700 individuals to the labor force in November.
The leisure and hospitality field saw the largest increase in employment, with 2,800 jobs gained in November. This field has seen 8,200 jobs gained over-the-year.
Professional, scientific, and business services accounted for the largest decline, with 1,400 jobs being lost. Despite the loss, these fields have seen a growth of 6,200 jobs over the past year.
Over-the-year, Massachusetts’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was down by 0.8%. The state's unemployment rate is still a half percentage point lower than it was in November 2022, where the rate was 3.4%.
