Mass. unemployment rate fell to 3.4% in September

The unemployment rate in Massachusetts in September dropped to 3.4%, down two tenths of a percentage point from August and down 1.7% from September 2021.

The national unemployment rate was one tenth of a percentage point higher than that of Massachusetts in September, at 3.5%, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Massachusetts gained 13,800 jobs in the month of September, according to the BLS preliminary estimates. Total employment in the state now stands at 3,691,700, having gained 640,700 since the employment trough at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020.

The largest over the month gains were made in the leisure and hospitality, education and health services, and construction industries.
