Mass. unemployment inches up to 3.0% in May

The Massachusetts unemployment rate ticked up one-tenth of a percentage point in May to 3.0%, the state said Friday.

Preliminary job estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show the state losing 3,600 jobs last month, with public-sector gains offsetting deeper losses in the private sector. Private-sector jobs fell by 4,000, the state said.

Massachusetts has added an estimated 26,700 jobs in the 12 months ending in May.

The latest unemployment data for the Worcester metro area, from April, was 2.9%. The Worcester metro area includes Worcester County and Windham County in Connecticut.

The national unemployment rate for May was 3.6%, down from 3.8% a year prior.

The state’s labor force participation rate – the total number of residents 16 or older who worked or were unemployed and actively sought work in the last four weeks – remained unchanged at 67.8 percent. Compared to May 2018, the labor force participation rate was up three-tenths of a percentage point.

The labor force participation rate is near a 15-year high and is five points above the national rate, according to the state.
