Mass. unemployment flat at 3.0%

The Massachusetts unemployment rate stayed flat at 3.0% in June, still beating the national rate, which ticked up a tenth of a percentage point to 3.7%.

New state data released Friday includes preliminary estimates Massachusetts added 9,800 jobs last month. Much of that includes private-sector growth, including in education, health services, leisure and hospitality, financial services and manufacturing.

The labor force decreased, however, by 2,100, hitting 3,838,800.

In June 2018, the state unemployment rate was 3.4%.

In the 12 months ending in June, the federal Bureau of Labor statistics estimates Massachusetts added 35,500 jobs.

The state’s labor force participation rate — the total number of residents 16 or older who worked or were unemployed and actively sought work in the last four weeks — dropped one-tenth of a percentage point at 67.7% over the month.

In the latest unemployment information for the Worcester metro area, in May, the unemployment rate was 3.4%, including 3.8% in the city of Worcester itself.
