The unemployment rate in Massachusetts fell to 3% in January, down 0.2% from revised December statistics.
An estimated 400 workers joined the labor force in January, according to statistics released by the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development on Friday. The state’s unemployment rate was 0.7% lower than the national rate of 3.7% reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The largest gain of jobs was seen in the professional, scientific and business services sector, which saw an increase of 6,100 jobs in January. Large gains were also seen in the leisure and hospitality sector, which saw 5,000 jobs gained, and the education and health service sector, which saw an increase of 4,300 jobs.
No sectors saw a decrease of jobs during the month, although the manufacturing sector saw no changes in the total amount of jobs.
The state’s labor force participation rate, which accounts for the amount of the working age population that is employed, remained at the previous rate of 64.9%. January estimates showed 3,636,100 Massachusetts residents were employed and 114,100 were unemployed, resulting in a total labor force of 3,750,300.
The unemployment rates for the individual metropolitan areas in Central Massachusetts is expected to be released on March 13. In December, those rates were 3.6% in Greater Worcester, 3% in Greater Framingham, 4% in the Leominster-Gardner area, and 4.2% in Greater Athol.
