The Massachusetts unemployment rate was down 0.3 percentage points in May, coming in at 6.1%, according to a Friday release from the state’s Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
That’s slightly lower than the 6.4% state unemployment rate the office reported for April.
The May unemployment rate was 0.3 percentage points higher than the national rate of 5.8% reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The unemployment rate in the Worcester metropolitan area was 6.0% in April. The May numbers for the local metropolitan areas will be released later this month.
The Massachusetts labor force participation rate, which includes the total number of residents 16 years or older who worked or were unemployed and sought work in the last four weeks remained at 66.4%.
Leisure and hospitality sectors gained the most jobs, with 3,200 positions added in May. The sector with the second-greatest job adds was education and health services, which added 2,400 jobs, according to Friday’s report.
