A new report has found that Massachusetts’ technology industry ranked fifth in the country and employed nearly 300,000 workers in 2015.
The 2016 Cyberstates report from tech association CompTIA found the tech industry employed 294,615 workers in 2015, with 11,699 net jobs added between 2014 and 2015. The report also found that 11 percent of the state’s economy comes from the technology industry, while a payroll of $37.7 billion in 2015 accounts for 9.8 percent of all private sector payroll in Massachusetts, nearly double the average for the country.
Massachusetts was only slightly edged out in terms of technology employment by Florida, which has 311,807 technology jobs in 2015. California remains the dominant state in the industry with 1.15 million technology jobs, with Texas taking second place with 585,614 jobs and New York came in third with 369,533 jobs. Massachusetts, however, was ranked third for the average tech sector wage at $127,875, behind California and Washington.
Overall growth for the country in the technology sector was strong, according to the report, with U.S. technology employment totaling 6.7 million workers in 2015, an increase of 198,200 workers over 2014.
